In this month’s update it seems that the phrase “all quiet on the wireless front” would be appropriate due to the fact that the FCC has not announced any news related to the White Spaces issue nor any acceptance of new devices that may interfere with production wireless as we know it. However, at the NAB show in Las Vegas last month, some interesting products and “workarounds” were discussed and introduced. One clever wireless manufacturer has a wireless body pack transmitter that has a built-in digital recorder. The only reason you would need to record the audio from the source in the transmitter would be if the radio link were to be interrupted. That is a great solution for film sound and broadcast taping but offers no relief in a live situation. It’s great that smart solutions are beginning to surface.

The main thing to note is that wireless equipment manufacturers are taking a “more bandwidth is better” as well as a “what happens if” approach. Both seem valid and practical given what we know at this juncture. New trends toward more flexible and functional equipment along with properly designed and maintained wireless systems will become crucial for reliable operation of production wireless.
